Bergen County Mosquito Prevention Tips

Bergen County Mosquito Population

Bergen County residents can take some simple precautions to reduce mosquito annoyance during the summer months.

Though the Division of Mosquito Control is working to reduce the mosquito populations every day in Bergen County, residents can also help fight mosquito problems by taking steps to remove pockets of standing water around their homes.

You can reduce the number of mosquitoes in your area by following these tips:

  • Dispose of tin cans, plastic containers, ceramic pots, tires or similar water-holding objects that have accumulated on your property.
  • Turn over wading pools, wheelbarrows, or other belongings where water may collect when not in use.
  • Drill holes in the bottom of recycling containers that are left outdoors. Containers with drainage holes that are located on the sides can collect enough water for mosquitoes to breed in.
  • Clean clogged roof gutters on a regular basis, particularly if the leaves from surrounding trees have a tendency to plug up the drains. Roof gutters are easily overlooked and can produce millions of mosquitoes each season.
  • Aerate ornamental pools or stock them with fish. Water gardens are fashionable but become major mosquito producers if they are allowed to stagnate.
  • Clean and chlorinate swimming pools that are not being used. A swimming pool that is left untended by a family that goes on vacation for a month can produce enough mosquitoes to result in neighborhood-wide complaints. Be aware that mosquitoes may even breed in the water that collects on swimming pool covers.
  • Use landscaping to eliminate standing water that collects on your property. Mosquitoes will develop in any puddle that lasts more than 4 days.

Also, be aware of peak mosquito hours. The hours from dusk to dawn are peak biting times for many species of mosquitoes. Take extra care to use repellent and protective clothing during the evening and early morning—or consider avoiding outdoor activities during these times.
