“Gardening with Bulbs” at Garden Club of Harrington Park November 1st Meeting

Garden Club of Harrington Park Plant Sale

Bergen County Gardening Clubs: The Garden Club of Harrington Park will hold its next meeting on Thursday, November 1st at 7:30 pm at the Harrington Park Library, 10 Herring Street, Harrington Park.  Guest speaker, master gardener Wiebke Hinsch, will present a slide lecture titled “Gardening with Bulbs”.

According to Wiebke, bulbs are the easiest perennials to garden with.  “They contain  the embryonic map of their beauty, surrounded by layers of food and moisture.  We put them in the soil in the fall, and as soon as the snow recedes and the sun gets warmer, they are the first to color the ground when we are most longing for it”.

Wiebke will explain which bulbs to plant and where to plant them.  She will discuss what makes bulbs different and about the great variety of shapes, sizes and colors they can produce over a ten month span of flowering.

Wiebke’s passion for gardening began 28 years ago when she moved into a house that had a neglected garden with a few old trees, shrubs and weeds.  In order to transform her rundown garden into a backyard paradise, she read gardening books and conversed with dedicated gardeners.  She also took courses with Ursula Joachim, who kindled Wiebke’s enthusiasm for plants, gardening and botany in general, at the New York Botanical Garden, where Wiebke eventually became a docent.

In 2000, Wiebke took part in the Master Gardener program at Rutgers University extension and divided her time between volunteer hours for the Bergen County Parks and her own backyard.  For several years she participated in the Open Days program of the Garden Conservancy and opened her garden, which has become her pride and joy and a source of deep satisfaction, to the public.

Since 2012 Wiebke has been a member of the Woodcliff Lake Shade Tree Committee, which endeavors to preserve the old tree canopy and to plant new trees for future generations.

The program will be followed by a “Q & A” session and refreshments.  The hostess and host for the evening will be Carla Jacobelli and Luke Brajkovic.

The GCHP welcomes all gardeners, active and armchair, from all towns, to their meetings and events.
