DESCRIPTION:Journalist and author Eric Garcia is coming to Bergen Community College to discuss his book\, “We’re Not Broken: Changing the Autism Conversation.” Garcia’s work was selected as Bergen’s Common Read book for 2025-2026 and aims to facilitate conversations around autism\, neurodiversity\, invisible disabilities\, and its portrayal in society. \nJoin Garcia in discussing the book’s themes of stigmas against neurodiversity\, their prevalence in society\, and how they impact neurodiverse individuals. The event is open to all Bergen students\, faculty\, and staff\, as well as community members. DESCRIPTION:–One in 31 children (3.2 percent) is identified with autism spectrum disorder (ASD)\, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention research. To foster dialogue on ASD and neurodiversity\, journalist Eric Garcia\, the author of “We’re Not Broken: Changing the Autism Conversation\,” will speak at Bergen Community College on Tuesday\, March 24 at 12:30 p.m. in the Moses Family Meeting and Training Center (Technology Education Center\, room 128) at the College’s main campus at 400 Paramus Road in Paramus. The event is free\, open to the public and presented by the College’s Office of Community Affairs\, Office of Specialized Services and Common Read Committee. \n  \nThe College has made the study of autism\, neurodiversity\, invisible disabilities and their portrayal in society a central focus of the current academic year\, selecting Garcia’s book on the topic as the institution’s “common read.” The initiative encourages all members of the College community to read the book and participate in discussions\, activities and projects surrounding the work throughout the year. Faculty also thread the book through coursework and assignments. \n  \nDuring the March 24 event\, Garcia\, a senior Washington correspondent for The Independent and MS NOW columnist\, will discuss his book\, which offers insight into neurodiversity and his perspective as an autistic person. DESCRIPTION:Bergen Community College will host an open house for prospective students and their families on Thursday\, November 13\, from 3:00 pm  to 6:00 pm at the institution’s main campus at 400 Paramus Road in Paramus. Attendees will have the opportunity to tour the College’s facilities\, review associate degree and certificate options\, meet with faculty and explore campus resources.  \n  \nThe open house will include workshops on financial aid and key programs such as the Community College Opportunity Grant\, which offers a tuition-free Bergen experience\, and the Educational Opportunity Fund\, which provides both financial assistance and academic support for eligible students. Bergen features a nationally recognized tutoring center\, a state-of-the-art STEM Student Research Center\, experiential learning spaces such as the Health Professions Integrated Teaching Center and a federally recognized one-stop student services center. \n  \nAdditionally at the open house\, prospective students can explore Bergen’s dynamic campus life offerings\, which include more than 50 student clubs and organizations\, 14 Division III sports and holistic student support services. \n  \nBergen offers more than 120 areas of study including aviation\, paramedic science\, criminal justice\, computer animation and a Center for Online Learning where students can earn a degree in one of six disciplines entirely online.
