DESCRIPTION:Diego Hedez (AKA Diego Miguel Hernández González) is a Cuban-born trumpeter\, composer\, and improviser whose musical voice fuses Afro-Cuban tradition with jazz and contemporary expression. Born in Remedios\, Villa Clara\, Diego began his musical journey at age nine at the Olga Alonso Vocational School\, exploring various instruments before committing to the trumpet. In 2012\, he won his first competition as a trumpeter; by 2014\, he recorded his first solo with the Villa Clara Youth Symphony. Diego’s collaborations have spanned both Cuban and international artists — from Dave Weckl\, Brian Lynch\, and Victor Goines\, to the Cuban-American drummer Francisco Mela and avant-garde icons like William Parker and Daniel Carter. \nUnder the artistic guidance of Kervin Barreto (of the GRAMMY-winning Calle 13)\, he gained new insight into performance and improvisation\, further refining his sound. Today\, Diego leads “The New Quartet” and collaborates with ensembles like the William Parker Ensemble. Through free improvisation and sonic exploration\, he continues to push musical boundaries while deeply rooted in Afro-Cuban and jazz traditions. \nWalk in cover charges will be higher than purchasing ticket online in advance

DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 11\, 2025\, 4:30-6:00 pm. French forces under Jean-Baptiste Donatien de Vimeur\, comte de Rochambeau entered New Jersey in the early morning hours of 26 August 1781. The inhabitants of Mahwah\, like all their fellow citizens of Bergen County\, were uneasy about these visitors. Long-time enemies\, the French had become America’s allies in 1778. But New Jerseyans knew little about the French or how they would behave. Conversely the French soldiers marching into Mahwah knew just as little about what awaited them in New Jersey. This illustrated talk provides examples of Franco-American encounters and mutual impressions of people and their customs\, the process of “getting to know each other\, and the beauty of northern New Jersey\, called le Jardin d’Amérique by French officers. \nAbout the speaker: Robert A Selig\, Ph.D.\, has been the consultant and project historian to the National Park Service for the Washington-Rochambeau Revolutionary Route National Historic Trail Project.
