DESCRIPTION:Bronx-born and raised Chazz Palminteri wrote A Bronx Tale in 1988. The powerful one-man stage play depicted his bruising childhood which included witnessing a gangland killing when he was nine years old. Palminteri plays 18 characters and brings them all to life in this autobiographical production where his friends\, enemies and family come alive on stage. \nHollywood Studios went crazy after seeing it and offered him millions of dollars to turn it into a major movie. There was one catch. They wanted to put a star in the role of Sonny and someone else to write the screenplay. With $200 dollars in the bank…Palminteri said No… he would hold out and wait. He wanted to play Sonny and write the screenplay. Then one night Palminteri walked into his dressing room and sitting there was Robert De Niro who just saw the show.  Robert DeNiro gave Palminteri the chance he was waiting for; and as they say in Hollywood the rest is history. Palminteri wrote the screenplay for the film A Bronx Tale and then most recently wrote the book for the Broadway Musical. It was the first time in history that the same actor wrote the one-man play\, the movie\, and the Broadway Musical and starred in each one. In the past 35 years\, Chazz has appeared in over 60 films. To name a few – The Usual Suspects\, Analyze This\, Mulholland Falls\, Jade\, Guide to Recognizing Your Saints\, Legend\, and Bullets over Broadway\, which he was nominated for an Academy Award.  He has starred in over 20 television series and has won 3 Emmy’s. Chazz is most recently seen in Modern Family\, Godfather of Harlem\, Law & Order and Gravesend.

He has recorded over 70 albums as a leader and many more as a sideman\, with several of his CDs earning Gold Disc Awards from Japan’s Swing Journal and critical acclaim worldwide. Allen holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Rutgers University and has performed at major jazz festivals and clubs across the United States\, Europe\, and Asia\, collaborating with legends such as Rosemary Clooney\, Ray Brown\, Hank Jones\, Scott Hamilton\, and John and Bucky Pizzarelli. In addition to his extensive recording and performance career\, he has appeared on film soundtracks and in commercials\, and is widely respected for his mastery of the Great American Songbook and mainstream jazz repertoire. Rossano Sportiello is an award-winning Italian jazz pianist born in Vigevano\, who began classical piano studies at age nine and was performing professionally by his mid-teens before joining Europe’s historic Milano Jazz Gang. He has since built an international career rooted in stride\, swing\, and bebop traditions\, drawing praise from mentors like Barry Harris and earning the 2009 Ascona Jazz Award for his mastery of jazz piano\, particularly stride. The self-started and hardworking singer/guitarist Vargas (born Luis Rafael Valdez Vargas) became involved in popular music after meeting a local musician who taught him how to play guitar. After deciding to pursue a solo career\, Luis Vargas self-produced his first single\, promoted and sold by himself. Supported by local artists Pedro Pimentel\, Artemio Sánchez\, Antonio Carrasco\, and Anthony Santos\, his music began being played by local radio stations. After issuing his music through an independent label\, Sony International signed him\, releasing Volvio el Dolor in 1997. Linar Espinal better known as El Chaval de la Bachata\, is a Dominican musician\, singer\, composer and producer who began his career in 1994 with the musical group Los Infantiles del Amargue launching as a solo artist under the Nepo Nuñez Records label with his first production titled Sentimiento Único (1997)\, that included the hit “Cuando el Amor se va”.

SUMMARY:Gilder Lehrman Traveling Historical Exhibit – Who Can Vote?: A Brief History of Voting Rights in the United States
DESCRIPTION:The Gilder Lehrman Traveling Historical Exhibit’s “Who Can Vote?: A Brief History of Voting Rights in the United States” showcase has come to Bergen Community College. The traveling exhibit will explore the biggest moments in American voting history\, from the Civil War and Reconstruction era to the Women’s Suffrage movement. Seven key moments in history will be displayed to allow everyone to dive deeper into the social issues and progress made during those eras\, allowing us to reflect on today’s American voting rights. “Who Can Vote?: A Brief History of Voting Rights in the United States” will be displayed from February 16 to March 13 at Bergen Community College’s Paramus Campus in the Pitkin Education Center. The first floor Student Center will display seven panels with each panel representing a specific era and highlighting the voting rights progress made during the time period.
