SUMMARY:America250 Lecture—General Robert Erskine: Mapmaker and Minemaster of the Revolution!
DESCRIPTION:The Oakland Public Library and Oakland Historical Society Present General Robert Erskine\, F.R.S.\, Minemaster and Mapmaker of the American Revolution on Sunday\, April 26 @ 1:30 pm Oakland Public Library\, Oakland\, New Jersey (ADA accessible) Free Admission\, All Are Welcome! Sponsored by the Oakland Public Library; Organized by the Oakland Historical Society\, Inc. RSVP (for Seating Planning) at bccls.libcal.com/event/16639149 \nDuring the Revolutionary War\, the work of Robert Erskine was deeply valued by George Washington\, who is said to have carried many of Erskine’s maps in his breast pocket. With remarkable precision\, these maps guided Washington and his army across New Jersey and beyond\, shaping the course of the war. \nErskine arrived in the colonies as a Loyalist industrialist\, tasked with managing the iron mines at Ringwood. Yet he died a committed patriot—an ardent supporter of American independence. The son of a Scottish minister\, Erskine sought his fortune in London but after being defrauded soon found himself in the poorhouse. Undeterred\, he rose to become an accomplished inventor\, designing instruments for both science and war. He was elected to the Royal Society of London—the world’s oldest continuously existing scientific academy—after being nominated by Benjamin Franklin\, with whom he maintained a close correspondence. \nHis transformation from British mine manager to Surveyor General of the Continental Army is often overlooked\, but his legacy endures. Today\, his maps continue to reveal extraordinary insights into our landscape\, our history\, and even the roads we travel. \nPresenter William “Billy” Neumann is a Certified Historic Preservationist (CHP) and a noted local historian\, as well as the author of three books on regional history. He previously served as Chair of Bergen County’s Historic Preservation Advisory Board and as Vice President of Preservation New Jersey. A lifelong resident of his family’s 1870s farmhouse in Rutherford\, Neumann humorously describes himself as its third-generation “resident spirit.” For more than 40 years\, he has worked as a commercial photographer in New York City and New Jersey. He is also a beekeeper and has volunteered with Habitat for Humanity for over three decades. \nThe Oakland Public Library The Oakland Public Library is a cultural center facilitating timely access to information\, ideas and forms of creative expression. The mission of the Oakland Public Library is to provide library resources and services to meet the evolving educational\, cultural\, recreational and informational needs of the community and to encourage lifelong learning. Explore more events at oaklandnjlibrary.org  \nOakland Historical Society This event has been organized by the Oakland Historical Society as part of The Borough of Oakland’s America250 series sponsored by the Oakland Public Library. Founded in 1966\, the Society is dedicated to collecting\, interpreting\, and preserving Oakland’s history and the stories of those who have called Oakland home and holds monthly open houses at the historic Van Allen House (See website for details). Throughout 2026\, the Society will be presenting a series of programs celebrating America’s 250th birthday\, including this series; holding special events welcoming Revolutionary War reenactors and craftspeople; and hosting America250 Pop-Up Exhibits featuring special displays of armaments and Colonial currency\, as well as period artifacts and manuscripts from the Society’s collection. In 2027\, the Society will celebrate the 250th anniversary of Washington’s stay at the Van Allen House and organize special events celebrating Oakland’s history for the Borough’s 125th anniversary. OaklandHistory.org
