For the Dog in Your Life

More than "best friends," dogs truly are members of the family.

Dogs are often more than just "man's best friend." Many consider them to be four-legged members of the family; loyal companions who offer unconditional love and stress relief.

So if you're looking for new ways to pamper your pooch,  consider one of Bergen County's upscale pet boutiques.

At Best of Breed Pet Salon & Boutique in Tenafly, owner Stephanie McLoughlin, a groomer for 13 years who has trained and shown dogs, stocks merchandise that is different and fun—like a pillow that reads, "No outfit is complete without dog hairs." All of her products (except for the clothing) have been "dog-tested" by her own three border collies, from the natural, cruelty-free shampoos and conditioners to the Robbie Dawg organic treats, baked in Brooklyn. Her most decadent item is a dog bed from Bowsers, a furniture-quality piece that can be made to order using exquisite fabrics. The plush cotton twill or microvelvet slipcovers are easily removed for cleaning and the comfortable filling is a dog's dream.

Amy's Royal Treatment in Saddle Brook caters to the pet-set with organic dog food and treats, as well as breed-specific novelty items for owners, which are very popular. Proprietor Amy Peraino, who worked at the store/grooming facility for 13 years before buying it two years ago, said one of her best sellers is frozen raw meat designed exclusively for dogs. The store's mascots are Peraino's two adorable bloodhounds, who ham it up royally on her website.

For the ultimate in pampering, The Dog Spa in Norwood, a salon and doggie day care center, offers a wealth of indulgences, including facial scrubs, bubble baths, aroma therapy—and even nail tips which can be painted an array of colors. The facility also hosts birthday parties for pups, and if you don't know what to bring, check out the edible greeting cards available for purchase, a delicious way to show you care.

Every day is a dog day at Bark & Fitz in Englewood, the first U.S. outpost of the Canadian dog-inspired health food chain. Organic foods, unusual items and useful gadgets line the shelves of this upscale boutique, where you'll find all-natural loofah chew toys that reduce tartar and specially engineered water bowls that slow a dog's drinking. Store manager Kimberly Fulmore said that the sluggish economy hasn't affected business since most of her customers would do without to give their kids and dogs the very best. And that includes holiday specials like Christmas and Hanukkah cookies and canned turducken, the perfect Thanksgiving treat–and a great way to keep those tails wagging.
