Have you adjusted to the end of daylight savings time? The Institute for Sleep-Wake Disorders at Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC), which recently received its re-accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, is offering a complimentary screening on Saturday, November 14, from 9 a.m. until noon. The institute offers treatment for a wide-range of sleep disorders, including sleep apnea, insomnia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and asthma, and regularly offers support group meetings at its 3 St. John, 30 Prospect Avenue, Hackensack location. The complimentary screening will be held at this location as well.
Sleep-wake disorders have become a growing national concern. About 40 percent of all adults are plagued by sleep problems, such as fragmented sleep or frequent wake-ups during the night. There are nearly 100 classified sleep disorders and some of them are quite serious and at times can be life threatening or extremely disabling.
The Institute for Sleep-Wake Disorders suggests the following six symptoms can signal inadequate sleep, and if any apply to you, discuss them with your personal physician:
- Dozing off while engaged in an activity such as reading, watching TV, sitting in meetings, or sitting in traffic
- Slowed thinking and reacting
- Difficulty listening to what is said or understanding directions
- Frequent errors or mistakes
- Depression or negative mood
- Impatience or being quick to anger
The Institute for Sleep-Wake Disorders at HUMC is dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of the full spectrum of sleep disorders. All services are provided by board-certified clinicians trained in the specialty of sleep medicine and experienced, registered sleep technologists, who are in touch with the most recent developments in the field of sleep-wake disorders. The institute offers six comfortably furnished sleep rooms and a lab equipped with the most technologically advanced audio, video, and computerized monitoring equipment available for conducting and scoring sleep studies.
In addition, the institute is one of three facilities in Bergen County accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Disorders Centers. For more information, to make an appointment or to attend a support group meeting, please call the Institute for Sleep-Wake Disorders at Hackensack University Medical Center at 201-996-3732 (DREAM) or visit www.humc.com.
