When the Rutherford Community Blood Bank needed to replace its beloved but aging banner, Rutherford resident Eileen Hiller, a director of the organization, looked to Rutherford High School for help. Soon, she received a delightful response. “Geraldine Howard, its Family and Consumer Science teacher, said Grace Hong, a senior in the advanced textile design class, would be happy to take on the assignment,” said Hiller.

As a former employee of RHS, she knew well the treasure trove of talent that could be found in its students.

A borough resident, the late Alice Helble, also made the organization’s first banner 50 years ago. With care and attention to detail, Hong replicated the original effort, using red and white felt and the same design.

“The success of the Rutherford Community Blood Bank is dependent on the generosity of community members and volunteers,” said its chairman, Andy Bertone. “We are very appreciative of Grace’s efforts and the support of Mrs. Howard. This banner will make a difference, and we’ll display it with pride.”
