Ramapo College of New Jersey has signed an affiliation agreement with the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi, Ghana. The agreement will enhance the achievements in teaching, research and the cultural development of both institutions through scholarly exchange opportunities for faculty and professional staff to participate in curriculum development and research, and for visiting students to pursue academic programs and activities.
A meeting was held between representatives from both schools at Ramapo College on June 3 during which the agreement was signed by Provost Beth Barnett and KNUST Vice Chancellor Dr. Kwasi Kwafo Adarkwah. Others in attendance from Ghana included Professor S.I.K. Ampadu, KNUST head of Civil Engeering, Dr. K. Adom Asamoah, KNUST professor of Civil Engineering and Kofi Owusu Daaku, KNUST professor of Biology and Ramapo College adjunct professor.
The agreement expands and formalizes a pre-existing relationship between the two institutions. Associate Professor of Environmental Science Eric Wiener taught the KNUST graduate course "Tropical Forest Ecology" in 2003 and Professor of Contemporary Arts Shalom Gorewitz was awarded a Senior Specialist Grant from the U.S. Fulbright Program in 2009 to teach workshops and consult on digital media at KNUST. Gorewitz also worked with two Ramapo College students, senior Marie Hargrove of Newark and Anthony Harris '10 of Trenton, who completed a two-week independent study at KNUST. Professor Daaku has taught classes in the School of Theoretical and Applied Sciences at RCNJ during summer sessions.
