Bergen Community College’s School of Continuing Education, Corporate and Public Sector Training is offering a series of sports management courses for the fall semester. Starke: The Sports Management Certificate Program is designed to foster leaders who understand and appreciate sports dynamics in the domestic and international communities.
To obtain a certificate, participants must complete all seven courses. Classes may be taken individually on a non-certificate basis. All courses will be held at Bergen Community College at the Meadowlands in Lyndhurst. The registration deadline is September 9, 2011. The required textbook for the course is “Principles and Practice of Sport Management,” (fourth edition) edited by Lisa Masteralexis, Carol A. Barr, and Mary A. Hums. This Community Based Job Training program is made possible by a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor – Employment and Training Administration.
Below is a listing and description of the courses that are offered.
• ME Sports Management Foundations Tuesdays, September 13 and 20, 2011 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Bergen Community College at the Meadowlands, Room 425 2 sessions; $120 This course will teach students about sports fundamentals and help them to learn leadership and management principles and practices. The class will touch upon various sports in the global community, and include supervision, communication, and organizational responsibilities in facilities management.
• ME 350 Emergency Management in Sports Wednesdays, September 14, 21 and October 5, 2011 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Bergen Community College at the Meadowlands, Room 132 3 sessions; $180 This course is designed to increase the student knowledge base in emergency management within sports. Leaders will learn to address different facets of crises, including law enforcement, medical response, mass emergency preparedness, proactive response cases and recovery.
• ME 348 Business Development, Marketing and Fundraising for Sports Management Tuesdays, September 27, October 4, 11, and 18, 2011 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Bergen Community College at the Meadowlands, Room 425 4 Sessions; $240 Students will learn contemporary sports terminology and applications in sports management. They will gain knowledge regarding sports promotions through community outreach and media relations. Financial concepts in fundraising development, capital campaigns, planned giving and donor motivations also will be discussed.
• ME 349 Financial and Personnel Management in Sports Mondays; October 10, 17 and 24, 2011 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Bergen Community College at the Meadowlands, Room 425 3 Sessions; $180 This course is designed to provide wide-ranging coverage of financial theories and concepts in facilities management, cash flow management, break-even analysis, and the impact of economic fluctuation in sports. Students will become skilled in staff interviewing, screening, and processing as they develop training programs and skills assessments.
• ME 347 Sports Law and Alternate Dispute Resolution Tuesdays; October 25, November 1 and 8, 2011 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Bergen Community College at the Meadowlands, Room 425 3 Sessions; $180 Students will examine current ethical complexities, the legal system within sports management, and alternative dispute resolution as a means of resolving conflicts that fall outside of the judicial system, as well as review negotiation, mediation, collaborative law and arbitration.
• ME 351 Sustainability in Sports Management Thursdays; November 3 and 10, 2011 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Bergen Community College at the Meadowlands, Room 132 2 Sessions; $120 The course will teach students how sports are going green. Sustainability concepts can be incorporated to many aspects of facility management to radically reduce the environmental impact of staging large sporting events. Students also will examine energy issues, water use, facility maintenance and traffic planning with the goal of increasing sustainability and profitability.
• ME 346 Consumer Behavior and the Sports Community Tuesdays; November 15, 22 and 29, 2011 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Bergen Community College at the Meadowlands, Room 425 3 Sessions; $180 This course will cover consumer influences and financial implications in domestic and international sports. Students will learn marketing strategies and the mindset, attitudes and behaviors that impact sports in the domestic and international communities. Lifestyle, personal and social behavior case studies also will be covered.
