The Bergen Community College Foundation awarded 160 scholarships to Bergen students totaling more than $185,000 at the Foundation’s 11th annual scholarship awards ceremony on Tuesday, April 26, 2011 in the Moses Family Meeting and Training Center on the College’s main campus in Paramus.

The event, which brought student scholarship winners and donors together to network, recognized the achievements of Bergen students from different disciplines, cultures and backgrounds. Scholarships are awarded to students based on both merit and financial need.

The Foundation also recognized another 30 students who received awards totaling close to $42,000 during the fall 2010 semester and the spring 2011 semester.

“We are tapping into the reservoir of good will for the College,” said Bergen Community College President Dr. G. Jeremiah Ryan. “Many of our students are in financial need even though they may not qualify for financial aid.” Dr. Ryan also thanked the College’s donors and the community for their support of Bergen.

“This is the best feel-good day we have at the College, outside of graduation,” said Phil Ciarco, member of both the Bergen Community College Board of Trustees and the College’s Foundation Board of Directors. Mr. Ciarco served as the emcee for the ceremony.

Bergen student Brendan Walsh, of Lyndhurst, received the Moses Family Scholarship, which is awarded to students who have completed two semesters at Bergen, with a minimum of 18 credits and a grade point average of 3.8 or greater. Mr. Walsh is an ex-Marine and has been involved in various student productions on campus.

He credits the College for his academic success. “When I came to Bergen, my expectation was to just get through it. Now, I have a very high grade point average. Different universities that I never thought I would be able to get into when I was in high school are suddenly a possibility, and with scholarships.”

Danielle DiBello, of Saddle Brook, was awarded the Arline Simpson ReachOut Scholarship, for a female student with a disability, who has demonstrated a strong commitment towards giving back to the community, as well as the Ethel Burns Endowed Scholarship for the Blind and Visually Impaired.

A legally blind student, Ms. DiBello plans to pursue a career in music. “Bergen has given me so many opportunities and made me realize that, as a legally blind individual, I can make it in the world. I can compete,” she said during a recent interview.

Aysha Mubasher, of Lodi, received the Ethel Pelletiere Scholarship, for a woman with children who is returning to or just entering college and is majoring in accounting. Ms. Mubasher is originally from Pakistan and moved to the United States to be closer to her family. She is majoring in accounting at Bergen and plans to continue her education at a four-year institution.

“For me this scholarship is not just a financial help, but a matter of great pride,” she said. “It gives me confidence and my family is very proud of me.”

Since its inception 29 years ago, the Foundation has raised $19 million to support the students, faculty and staff, and to fund construction and special projects and programs at Bergen. In the past 5 years, the Foundation has awarded more than $785,000 in scholarships.
