To mark the 90th anniversary of the Constitutional Amendment which gave women the right to vote, County Executive Dennis McNerney and the Bergen County Commission on the Status of Women invite you to view a special exhibit honoring legendary women in celebration of Women’s Equality Day. The exhibit officially opened on August 12 at One Bergen County Plaza, Hackensack, in the First Floor Lobby.

“Bergen County celebrates women, past and present, who are scientists, homemakers, educators, volunteers, doctors, lawyers, elected officials, bankers, brokers and advocates, in every walk of life, who have worked tirelessly to enrich the lives of their families and others throughout the nation and the world,” McNerney said. The County Executive urges all citizens of Bergen County to take note of this day, which is the 90th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, which guarantees women the right to vote.

This year, the Bergen County Commission on the Status of Women 2009-2010 Junior Commissioners has created an exhibit of those in the forefront of the struggle for women’s rights including Elizabeth Cady Stanton of Tenafly, who, in her, “Declaration of Sentiments,” wrote it was the sacred duty of women to pursue the right to vote. The Women’s Suffrage Movement lasted 72 years, from the Seneca Falls Convention of 1848 to the passage of the 19th Amendment on August 26, 1920.

The exhibit will be on display from August 12 to August 31, 2010 in the lobby of the County Administration Building, One Bergen County Plaza, Hackensack. For information about the Commission on the Status of Women and the Junior Commissioner exhibit, please contact Gina Meyers, Commission Administrator at 201-336-7455.
